Yes, Portugal’s Golden Visa program allows foreign investors to become residents of the country, providing the freedom to live, work, study, and move within the Schengen Zone. After holding temporary residency for 5 years, investors and their families can apply for Portuguese citizenship.

To maintain your Golden Visa residency, you must spend 7 days in Portugal during the first year and 14 days in subsequent years. These days do not need to be consecutive. Note that, due to COVID-19, the Portugal Golden Visa’s initial validity has been extended to two (2) years, providing investors with more time to meet the requirements.

If you spend less than half of the year in Portugal, you are considered a non-tax resident and are only taxed on income earned within Portugal. However, if you become a tax resident in Portugal, you have the option to become a non-habitual resident, exempting you from taxes on worldwide income in Portugal. Portuguese-sourced income is taxed at a flat rate of 20% during the first 10 years, and there is no inheritance tax on passing your wealth to a spouse or dependent.

There is no obligation to live in the property you invest in through Portugal’s Golden Visa Program. The investment property can be rented out or sold for another property, as long as you maintain the minimum investment amount for the full 5-year period.
